Hynfra to develop green ammonia project in Mauritania

Hynfra has inked a framework agreement with the Government of Mauritania for the development of a green ammonia project in Nouakchott. The project is planned to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually starting in 2030. The total capital expenditure for the project is expected to be $1.5 billion.

The project will be located in the southern zone of the Somelec wind farm, with exports planned through Port de l’Amitié, the country’s largest port. It will include photovoltaic and wind farms, electrolyser units, a green ammonia production plant, and supporting infrastructure like water desalination, energy storage, and logistics for exports.

In November 2024, Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones partnered with Hynfra to develop a green ammonia production facility with an initial investment of $1.6 billion. The first phase of the plant will be powered entirely by renewable energy. Surplus electricity will contribute to Egypt’s national grid, while the facility will export its output to the European Union under long-term agreements.
