Construction work begins at Bahrain’s first solar project

The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), Bahrain has commenced work on Bahrain’s first solar power plant for electricity generation, with a planned capacity of up to 150 MW.  The facility will be located in the southern region near Bilaj Al Jazayer, covering an area of about 1.2 square kms, and will incorporate advanced solar technologies to maximise efficiency.

Commercial operations of the project are expected to start in the third quarter of 2027. A consortium has been appointed to provide advisory services throughout the project lifecycle, including feasibility studies, planning, and technical oversight through to commercial operation. KPMG Fakhro will act as the financial advisor, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff as the technical advisor, and Trowers & Hamlins as the legal advisor.

The project is part of Bahrain’s National Renewable Energy Plan, which aims to raise the share of clean energy to 20 per cent of the national energy mix by 2035. Once operational, it is expected to supply electricity to around 6,300 homes and contribute to an annual reduction of more than 100,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.
