Gilkes Energy secures planning consent for 1.8 GW Earba storage project in UK

Gilkes Energy’s Earba Storage Project has secured planning consent from the Energy Consents Unit of the Scottish Government in UK. This is a proposed pumped storage hydro (PSH) scheme with an installed capacity of 1,800 MW and a storage capacity of 40,000 MWh. The project provides 22 hours of storage at full power.

Furthermore, the Earba Storage Project supports decarbonisation, strengthens energy security, and lowers costs for consumers. Gilkes Energy is working closely with the UK Government and Ofgem to implement the Long Duration Energy Storage Cap & Floor mechanism in 2025. This is an investment framework that acknowledges the importance of PSH along with addressing the challenges associated with financing these capital-intensive, long-term projects.

Gilkes Energy is a UK-based company specialising in the development of hydro power projects, especially joint ventures with landowners. They have helped landowners fund and develop 11 hydro projects in the range of 500 kW to 2 MW, which are now operational, and have an additional approximately 20 MW at various stages of development.
