ACWA Power has signed a MoU with the Tunisian Government represented by the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy to explore the potential for a green hydrogen project. The project aims to produce up to 600,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen in three phases, for export to Europe.
Furthermore, ACWA Power will build, operate, and maintain 12 GW of renewable energy power producing units, incorporating storage systems and transmission lines, as well as water desalination plants, electrolyzers, and infrastructure to link to the main pipeline.
The first phase will involve installing 4 GW of renewable energy units, 2 GW of electrolyser capacity, and battery storage facilities, targeting the production of 200,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen. The green hydrogen produced will be exported via the South2 Corridor, a hydrogen pipeline initiative identified as a Project of Common Interest by the EU, which will connect Tunisia to Italy, Austria and Germany.
