The Greek authorities have awarded 300 MW of new battery storage capacity in its second energy storage tender. The 11 winning projects range in size from 8.875 MW/17.75 MWh to 49.9 MW/100 MWh. Winners include Terna’s 40 MW project plus a separate 12 MW installation by its Heron subsidiary, Motor Oil’s three projects totaling 72 MW, CNI’s two 25 MW projects, Bat Solar’s 49.9 MW project, Energiaki Tehniki won a 8.875 MW project, Enel’s 49 MW, and Solek’s 18 MW battery project.
Last week, Greece’s Regulatory Authority for Energy had announced 48 provisional projects in the country’s second energy storage auction, totaling 1.5 GW/3.1 GWh. In this round, the average winning bid is €46.680 per MW annually. The list included 42 developers’ proposals. However, bids amounting to 113 MW from seven companies were not included in the competition.
According to media reports, successful candidates included Amber Energy, CNI Energy, Energeiaki Techniki, Enel Green Power from Italy, Heron and Terna Energy from Greece. Mytilineos, BayWa, and Elpedison projects were not selected for the next round. The process of auctions required developers to compete for long-term operational grants.
This second auction comes after the initial round of auctions in August 2023, when 12 projects totaling 411 MW were awarded at an average annual cost of €49.748 per MW. Another round is planned for April 2025, with the goal of allocating an additional 300 MW. These tenders are part of the country’s 1 GW energy storage auction program.
