Neoen Australia, a producer of renewable energy, has submitted planning documents for the construction of a stand-alone 1 GW / 4 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) near Collie, Western Australia. Reportedly, the big battery would be constructed on a 31-hectare location 12 km to the northeast of Collie and 215 km to the southeast of Perth. The battery is anticipated to be built in five stages, each of which will have a capacity of 200 MW/800 MWh.
Additionally, the company is requesting permission to construct new switchgear, a 330/33 kV substation with step-up power transformers, and 330 kV overhead cables in order to link with the current Western Power transmission network. According to the company, the staged approach to development means that construction activities could last up to ten years, with each stage generating up to 150 direct jobs.
In January 2022, Neoen began preliminary work on South Australia’s 412 MW Goyder South Stage I wind farm. The Goyder Renewables Zone’s first stage is Goyder South Stage I. The Goyder Renewables Zone would be located near Burra in South Australia’s Mid North region, which would include a total of 1,200 MW of wind generation, 600 MW of solar generation and 900 MW of battery storage capacity.
