UK and California join forces for clean energy

The UK and California have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand cooperation on clean energy, climate, and environmental initiatives. The agreement builds on longstanding collaboration between the two regions and establishes a refreshed framework to promote innovation, scale clean energy technologies, and strengthen links between businesses and research institutions.

Moreover, it seeks to advance deployment of technologies that reduce exposure to fossil fuel price volatility and support environmental protection. The partnership also emphasises knowledge sharing on safeguarding homes, public services, and local economies from climate risks. California continues to generate a majority of its electricity from low-carbon sources and aims for fully clean power by 2045.

Furthermore, Octopus Energy Generation has announced an investment of nearly $1 billion in California’s clean technology. The funding will support carbon removal companies focused on land restoration, and investment in heat battery technologies for industrial decarbonisation. Additionally, it will acquire a solar-plus-storage project in California which is expected to become operational by July 2026.
