ADB sanctions $460 million loan to boost agricultural solarisation in Maharashtra

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a results-based loan of $460 million. The loan is intended to upgrade rural power infrastructure and promote distributed renewable energy generation. It further aims to boost agricultural productivity by ensuring farmers have access to dependable daytime solar power for irrigation in the state of Maharashtra.

Furthermore,  an additional $40 million concessional loan from the Clean Technology Fund, which is administered by ADB, will complement the Maharashtra Power Distribution Enhancement Programme for Agricultural Solarisation. The programme aligns with the state’s Power Sector Vision 2030, which focuses on accelerating renewable energy adoption, improving rural energy access, and strengthening the financial sustainability of the power sector.

Under this programme, agricultural feeders will be solarised, rural distribution networks will be modernised, and battery energy storage systems will be deployed. Additionally, it will promote green jobs and entrepreneurship, particularly for women. Furthermore, the programme targets supplying daytime power to at least 900,000 agricultural consumers and cutting annual greenhouse gas emissions by over 3 million tonnes by 2028.

Earlier in July 2025, ADB partnered with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to launch the India Green Finance Facility, supported by $200 million in concessional funding from GCF.
