ADB approves $52 million loan for Cambodia grid expansion project

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $52.72 million loan to support the Grid Expansion Project in Cambodia. The initiative will boost the national transmission network, enable greater integration of renewable energy, and address the country’s increasing electricity demand with locally generated clean power.

Between 2020 and 2024, Cambodia’s domestic power generation rose significantly, with output increasing from 8.68 TWh to 17.85 TWh. During the same period, electricity imports declined from 3.06 TWh to 1.57 TWh, reflecting improved energy self-sufficiency.

To accommodate this progress, the initiative will construct 55 km of 230 kV transmission lines between Pursat and Kampong Chhnang. Additionally, it will upgrade nine substations across the country. Furthermore, the initiative is aligned with Cambodia’s Power Development Master Plan (2022-2040) and the National Energy Efficiency Policy (2022-2030).

Earlier this month, the Asian Development Bank approved a $51 million financing package to support the development of ACWA Power’s 200 MW Nukus 2 wind project with a 100 MWh battery energy storage system in Uzbekistan. The package includes $25.4 million from ADB’s ordinary capital resources and $25.4 million from the Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund 2.
