Hiranmay De began his professional journey in 1987 with NTPC Limited, and transitioned to Powergrid in 1991. In 2003, he joined PTC India. Currently, as executive director at PTC India, his responsibilities encompass a range of operational activities including T-GNA booking, scheduling various power sources such as thermal, hydro and wind, monitoring power exchange activities, facilitating cross-border trading and managing Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s energy portfolio. He also serves on the technical committee of the Hindustan Power Exchange, an initiative spearheaded by PTC India Limited.
According to De, the future of the power sector is characterised by a shift towards renewable energy, the integration of energy storage and electric vehicles, digitalisation and comprehensive regulatory reforms. These factors are expected to drive sustainable development, improve energy access and establish India as a frontrunner in the global clean energy domain.
However, inherent challenges persist regarding energy access, energy security, intermittency issues and grid stability. “As we strive to achieve our objectives under the Nationally Determined Contributions, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2070, these challenges become even more pronounced for a country that not only holds the title of the world’s most populous nation but is also experiencing significant economic growth, with a nominal GDP increase of 12-13 per cent,” says De. Despite the emphasis on renewable energy, the continued reliance on thermal generation to meet power demand cannot be ignored.
A graduate from Jadavpur University, De recalls his most memorable assignment as the time when a 24×7 control room was being established for trading operations, marking a pivotal moment for PTC and elevating it to the status of India’s leading trader. Further, the commercial scheduling of wind power connected to the central transmission utility set a new benchmark for the industry.
De’s leadership style centres on fostering collaboration and mutual respect, prioritising teamwork for collective success. He ensures that every team member feels valued, empowering them to voice ideas openly. Recognising merit motivates individuals to excel and maintain a standard of excellence.
De leads by example, creating a dynamic and inclusive culture that drives shared goals.
