SJVN inaugurates first multi-purpose green hydrogen pilot project

SJVN Limited has inaugurated India’s first multi-purpose (combined heat and power) green hydrogen pilot project. Located at its 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri hydro power station (NJHPS) in Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh, the green hydrogen generated by the project will be used to meet NJHPS’s combustion fuel requirements at the high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coating facility. Furthermore, it will produce power using its 25 kW fuel cell. The project is set to expedite the establishment of green hydrogen production infrastructure within the power industry, thereby solidifying green hydrogen’s status as a clean energy source.

The innovative project is scheduled to generate 14 kilograms of green hydrogen per day for eight hours of operation. Six storage tanks with a combined capacity of 12 meter cube will store the produced hydrogen at a pressure of 30 bars. The 1.31 MW solar power plant of SJVN in Wadhal, Shimla, will provide renewable energy for the project’s alkaline electrolyser of 20 Nm3 per hour capacity. In addition to producing energy, the green hydrogen will be utilised to coat underwater turbine parts with HVOF. In addition, a 1,500 MW NJHPS and 412 MW Rampur hydro power station were also inaugurated.

Recently, in April 2024, SJVN Green Energy Limited issued tender for the provision and deployment of balance of system packages for a total of 400 MW solar projects.
