Corsica Sole to construct hydrogen pilot plant in Corsica

Corsica Sole, a French solar power producer, announced plans to build the first green hydrogen manufacturing facility on the French island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea. The proposal was recently revealed ahead of the Hyvolution 2024 show in France and has already gotten regulatory clearance. The proposed Foll’Hy facility would be built in the village of Folelli, where it will generate green hydrogen through electrolysis using power from a 12 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) park.

Reportedly, its annual output is estimated to be roughly two tonnes, beginning in the first quarter of 2025. The demonstration plant will provide hydrogen for heavy maritime mobility in the commune of Bastia and the region. The Folell’Hy project will convert excess solar energy into renewable hydrogen using the 30 Nm3/h electrolyzer, store the latter and make it available to users after packaging it in transportable tanks at 200, 300 or 500 bar. The entire system will be directly connected to the existing Folelli solar power plant (12 MWp) and will have a storage capacity of around 100 kg of hydrogen.

Furthermore, the project will help store renewable power generated on the island, which cannot be fed into the grid due to network limitations. As per the company’s statement, it has already taken an investment decision and secured all needed funds for the initiative. On-site construction works are due to begin in the second half of 2024.
