Skyborn Renewables has applied to the Swedish government for permission to build the country’s largest offshore wind farm, the 3.9 GW Eystrasalt project in the Bothnian Sea. Reportedly, the project area has been chosen, among other things, because of the good wind conditions and the favorable sea depth, but also the proximity to both Finland and northern Sweden.
The 3.9 GW Eystrasalt offshore wind farm will have about 256 wind turbines and be situated about 60 km off the coast of Gävleborg in the Swedish economic zone in the Bothnian Sea. Once completed, the project will generate 15 TWh of electricity annually, enough to supply 10 per cent of Sweden’s current electricity usage.
In January 2023, Ørsted requested permission for building offshore wind projects in Swedish waters with a total capacity of 15 GW. This capacity is planned to be developed near Sweden’s southern tip and the Gulf of Bothnia in the north, and can be brought online in the next ten years.
