Under the solar canal bank and canal top scheme which was launched in 2014-15 by the MNRE, 24 MW was commissioned as of March 2017 and another 50 MW will be commissioned by April 2017. These projects are a part of the programme to develop 100 MW of grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) power projects on canal banks and canal tops. The projects are set up in eight different states: Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, ranging from a minimum of 1 MW to a maximum of 10 MW.
