India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution is expected to be driven by the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments. Over 70-80 per cent of all private vehicles are two-wheelers, while three-wheelers are crucial for public transport, last-mile connectivity and freight. India’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2070 has intensified the need for greater adoption of EVs. However, large-scale EV adoption in India has been limited by various factors such as long refuelling time, lack of charging infrastructure, higher costs of EVs and range anxiety.

Battery swapping is an alternative, which has the potential to eliminate such challenges. It involves simply exchanging discharged batteries for charged ones. Battery swapping can give rise to innovative business models, such as battery as a service, which would allow battery usage and EV charging to be de-linked. This can significantly lower upfront costs, range anxiety and the need for large spaces for setting up EV charging stations. Considering the status of EV uptake in cities, the Government of India announced its intent to launch a Battery Swapping Policy during Budget 2022-23. NITI Aayog has subsequently drafted the Battery Swapping Policy, which aims to catalyse the adoption of EVs in the country.

Renewable Watch is organising a webinar to provide an understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the adoption of battery swapping models in India, against the backdrop of the recent draft Battery Swapping Policy launched by NITI Aayog.

We hope that the webinar will provide a platform for a useful exchange of information and ideas on the strategies to meet the objectives of the Battery Swapping Policy and boost EV adoption.

The webinar is targeted at charging point operators, battery swapping facility operators, vehicle OEMs, battery manufacturers, consultancies and research organisations, financial institutions, and other experts.

The panel will discuss questions such as:

  • What are the key considerations for setting up battery swapping stations? What has been the experience with the initial facilities that have been set up?
  • What is your take on the recent draft Battery Swapping Policy?
  • What incentives are currently being offered by the central and various state governments for setting up battery swapping facilities? What measures are needed for scaling up?
  • What role will interoperability play in battery swapping facilities? What measures (data sharing, standardisation, etc.) need to be taken to ensure a seamless user experience?
  • How can India overcome the challenges associated with battery design and safety considerations?
