Grenergy has secured capacity contracts for five standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Poland through the latest auction conducted by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), the national electricity system operator. The awarded projects have a combined power capacity of 534 MW, translating into 2.1 GWh of storage, and will function as reserve capacity when minimum system availability cannot be ensured.
These projects account for over 11 per cent of the total storage capacity allocated in the auction and form part of Grenergy’s broader Greenbox stand-alone storage platform in Europe, which has a reported development pipeline of 31 GWh. Starting from January 2030, the contracted capacity services will be compensated at a fixed, inflation-indexed rate of PLN 465.02 per kW per year over a 17-year period. The total minimum guaranteed economic allocation from these contracts exceeds €132 million.
Capacity payments will represent one component of the revenue structure for each project. Additional income streams are expected from energy trading activities and participation in regulated markets, including ancillary services, which may be arranged through tolling agreements. In an additional development, Grenergy has secured capital grants from the Polish government amounting to PLN 34 million, equivalent to around €8 million, for four smaller standalone storage projects with a combined capacity of 136 MWh. These projects are expected to be commissioned before 2028.
