Ilmatar has commenced commercial operations at the Pahkakoski wind farm located in Ii, Northern Ostrobothnia. The project comprises 30 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 186 MW. The turbines installed at Pahkakoski reach a tip height of 245 metres. Construction of the wind farm began in late 2023.
The project adopted the transport, crane, and installation contracting model, under which transportation, lifting, and installation were managed separately from the turbine supplier’s standard scope. This approach marks one of the first large-scale European wind projects implemented using this model, enabling streamlined construction and operational readiness. The project is expected to generate approximately 600 GWh of clean electricity annually.
In June 2025, the 30 MW/141 MWh Ainola battery energy storage system (BESS) project was commissioned and began commercial operations. The BESS project, designed for a 15-year operational life, can participate in day-ahead and intraday electricity trading and, once approved for reserve markets, will also support frequency regulation. Ilmatar developed and constructed the project, retaining a 10 per cent ownership stake, while Nuveen Infrastructure holds the majority share.
