AXA IM Alts has signed an agreement to acquire a 50 per cent stake in Coalburn 1 project from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). Coalburn 1 is a 500 MW and two-hour duration lithium-ion facility. The project is located in South Lanarkshire, in southern Scotland. The agreement will take effect upon the site’s commissioning. The project is expected to begin commercial operations in early 2026.
Furthermore, Coalburn 1 is one of three transmission-connected BESS projects currently under construction by CIP in Scotland. Together, these three projects will provide a combined power capacity of 1.5 GW and will be able to store and supply the grid with a total of 3 GWh of electricity. In December 2023, CIP reached a financial investment decision for Coalburn 1.
In March 2025, CIP entered into a partnership with GC Storage Services for a 2.3 GW pipeline of large-scale BESS projects in Italy. This partnership was formed using CIP’s flagship fund CI V.
