THDC India Limited has commenced the commercial operation declaration process for the first 250 MW unit of the 1,000 MW variable speed pumped storage project (PSP) at Tehri in Uttarakhand. The Tehri PSP is reportedly the first variable speed PSP in India.
Once fully operational, the PSP will raise the total capacity of the Tehri hydro power complex to 2,400 MW. The project aims to convert off-peak surplus energy into peak-hour power, enhancing grid resilience and enabling round-the-clock electricity availability.
In April 2025, THDC India Limited successfully synchronised the first 250 MW unit of its 1,000 MW PSP at Tehri, Uttarakhand, operating in pump condenser mode.
