TSPL commissions torrefied biomass manufacturing facility in Punjab

Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), a Vedanta Power company and thermal power producer, has established a torrefied biomass manufacturing facility near its 1,980 MW thermal plant in Mansa, Punjab. The new plant, with a capacity of 500 tonnes per day, converts agricultural stubble into carbon-neutral, clean-burning bio-pellets through a thermochemical process. These torrefied bio-pellets offer a higher energy density compared to raw biomass, making them suitable for TSPL’s supercritical thermal power operations that require high-grade biofuels.

TSPL has procured over 800,000 tonnes of agricultural stubble during the paddy season to convert into approximately 640,000 tonnes of torrefied bio-pellets at the new facility. Additionally, TSPL co-fires 450 tonnes of torrefied biomass daily sourced from open markets.

By integrating torrefied biomass into its fuel mix, the company will reportedly reduce daily coal usage by five per cent. These efforts are expected to collectively reduce nearly 2.6 million tonnes of carbon emissions. Furthermore, the facility is part of Vedanta’s broader decarbonisation strategy aimed at achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
