Siemens Gamesa, a Spanish developer of wind turbines, has won a contract with Polenergia and Equinor to supply turbines for the offshore Bałtyk II and Bałtyk III wind farms Poland. The projects will provide green energy to two million Polish households with a combined capacity of 1.44 GW. The company has placed an order for the manufacturing, delivery, and servicing of wind turbines. The order follows a reservation agreement inked in February 2022.
The projects moved forward with the recent environmental approval of the link infrastructure by the Regional Director of Environmental Protection in Gdansk, allowing the building permit procedures to begin. In addition to Bałtyk II and Bałtyk III, Equinor and Polenergia are progressing with the Bałtyk I project. Situated 80 km offshore Łeba, this offshore wind farm has a maximum capacity of 1.56 GW. The three Bałtyk wind farms will have a total capacity of 3 GW, enough to power four million Polish households.
RWE announced its plan to use GreenerTower from Spanish wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa for its 1 GW Thor offshore wind farm off the coast of Denmark. The new wind turbine tower is said to be made of sustainable steel. Steel plates make up over 80 per cent of the towers. The fabrication of the plates uses 63 per cent less carbon than the production of conventional steel.
