Akaysha Energy has achieved final commercial operations at the Waratah Super Battery project in New South Wales. The project includes a system integrity protection scheme control system delivered by Transgrid along with a battery energy storage component (BESS). The BESS component has an installed capacity of 850 MW/1,680 MWh.
Furthermore, the project, built at the former Munmorah coal-fired power station site, is owned and operated by Akaysha Energy. The project was commissioned by the New South Wales government. The project also attracted more than $1 billion in private investment and involved around 1,000 workers during its design and construction.
In July 2026, Akaysha Energy Japan, along with Tokyu Land and IBeeT, commenced construction of the Iizuka Seita grid-scale BESS project in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The lithium-ion battery project will have an installed capacity of 20 MW/82 MWh. The project is being supported under Japan’s 2024 subsidy programme for renewable energy integration and grid-scale storage systems. Commercial operations for the project are scheduled to commence from 2027 onwards.
