The Ministry of Power (MoP) has approved the export of electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority for 18 hours a day, from September 13 to December 31, 2026. Under the approval, up to 600 MW of power can be exported through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur–Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
The quantum of power to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026. The approval will help Nepal meet its power requirements, as the recent floods in Nepal have caused damage to hydropower infrastructure, leading to lower domestic power generation and increased electricity requirements. This will further strengthen the close and longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal.
Earlier, in August 2026, MoP allowed renewable energy projects to use electricity curtailed under temporary general network access (T-GNA) to charge additional co-located battery energy storage systems (BESS). The additional BESS should not be covered under the existing power purchase agreement or power sale agreement.
