Vattenfall has taken the final investment decision (FID) to build a standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) project at the former Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant site in Germany. The project will have an installed capacity of 254 MW/1,000 MWh and will be connected to the 50Hertz 380 kV transmission grid. The project, expected to be operational by the end of 2028, will nearly double Vattenfall’s BESS capacity.
In August 2026, Return and Vattenfall signed a long-term agreement for the 200 MW/800 MWh Sirius BESS project located in Winschoten, Groningen, Netherlands. The project is being delivered by Huawei, Hanab and Omexom, covering battery technology, construction and installation. Under the agreement, Vattenfall will secure access to the project’s charging, storage and power delivery capacity in exchange for a fixed fee.
In August 2026, Vattenfall was awarded the Hesselø and North Sea I Mid offshore wind projects in Denmark’s latest offshore wind tender. The Hesselø project, located in the Kattegat Sea, will have a minimum capacity of 800 MW, while the North Sea I Mid project, located near Hvide Sande, will have a minimum capacity of 1,000 MW. Grid connections have been reserved for both projects. The projects strengthen Vattenfall’s Danish offshore wind portfolio, which currently stands at around 1.5 GW.
