Power Line Summit I Energy Security and the Role of Electricity

On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, Power Line Magazine hosted the Power Line Summit 2026: Petrostate to Electrostate.

The panel discussion on “Energy Security And The Role Of Electricity”, examined the changing priorities of India’s power sector.

The panel included:
•Dr Ajay Mathur, Professor, School of Public Policy, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
•Gauri Singh, Deputy Director General, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
•Ashish Khanna, CEO, Adani Green Energy Ltd.
•Dr Sai Baba Darbamulla, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power
•Alok Brara, Publisher, Power Line Magazine

Key takeaways:
-The ongoing conflict in West Asia has emphasised the need to diversify energy supply chains and electrify the economy. The uptake of renewables is key for this transition. However, the renewables sector faces challenges with respect to land acquisition and availability of transmission infrastructure.

-There can be no energy transition without transmission infrastructure. Several transmission projects have been planned, but timely implementation of projects and optimisation of the existing infrastrucuture will be key. In addition, there should be a focus on increasing the uptake of battery storage, pumped storage, and green hydrogen.

-The panel highlighted that it will be difficult to transition to an electrostate without resolving the issue of financially distressed discoms. To this end, the focus should be on enhancing payment security through SECI and other central agencies for renewable projects, capping inter-state charges like CSS, and ensuring the uptake of new technologies.

-India can become an electrostate sooner than envisaged. The West Asia crisis, for one, has encouraged the uptake of heat pumps and electric stoves. Electrification will also increase due to greater demand that will come from data centres and green hydrogen.

-Going forward, policymakers should ensure that transmission infrastructure and generation plants are set up in tandem to avoid curtailment and revenue losses for stakeholders. In addition, all concerned ministries should come together to form an integrated plan for electrification and enable synchronised policy making.
