Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways launches indigenous hydrogen fuel cell vessel

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has announced the development of an indigenous hydrogen fuel cell vessel. Furthermore, the vessel developed in India uses advanced fuel cells, batteries, and solar technologies and is powered by clean hydrogen with zero carbon emissions.

The vessel can carry up to 50 passengers on inland waterways. Additionally, this development is a major step towards Green Shipping and Maritime India Vision 2030.

In February 2026, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways approved a Rs 7.97 billion green hydrogen and ammonia handling jetty at Paradip Port in Odisha. The facility, to be developed by Paradip Port Authority under the build, operate and transfer model, is planned with a handling capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum.
