NHPC Limited has signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh for the implementation of the 3,097 MW Etalin hydroelectric project (HEP) on the Dri and Tangon rivers in the Dibang Basin. Under the agreement, the state government has granted NHPC permission to undertake preliminary investigations, prepare the pre-feasibility report and detailed project report, and subsequently develop, finance, commission, operate, and maintain the project.
Furthermore, the project will be implemented on a build, own, operate, and transfer basis with a lease period of 40 years from the commercial operation date. The Etalin hydro project will be developed as a run-of-the-river scheme in accordance with the Arunachal Pradesh Hydro Power Policy, 2008. Upon completion, the project is expected to generate around 11,600 MUs of clean energy annually.
In February 2026, NHPC commenced commercial operations of the third 250 MW unit of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower HEP. The project comprises eight units of 250 MW each and is located near North Lakhimpur on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
