Lightsource bp commences construction of 380 MWdc solar plus storage project in Australia

Lightsource bp has commenced construction of the Lower Wonga hybrid renewable energy project located near Gympie, Queensland. The project comprises a 380 MWdc solar farm with a 281 MW/843 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The project will commence operations in late 2028. A joint venture between INTEC Energy Solutions and Gotion Hi-Tech Australia will deliver the project.

Furthermore, the project is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 126,000 homes annually while adding significant renewable and dispatchable capacity to the National Electricity Market. A hybrid offtake agreement has been signed with Rio Tinto for the project. The project has also secured support under the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme.

In February 2026, Lightsource bp announced the sale of its Australian solar portfolio to Aula Energy. The transaction covers five operational solar projects with a combined capacity of 1,037 MWdc. The assets included in the portfolio are the Wellington, Wellington North, West Wyalong, Woolooga, and Wunghnu projects. The projects are located across New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria.
