HD Renewable Energy has partnered with Tokyo Gas Co to advance approximately 340 MW of battery energy storage (BESS) projects in Japan. The collaboration includes operational services and long-term offtake agreements across multiple projects. Around 149 MW of projects in Aomori Prefecture have been secured under Japan’s Long-Term Decarbonization Auction (LTDA) scheme.
Furthermore, these projects are expected to begin commercial operations by financial year 2029, with HDRE handling development and Tokyo Gas managing operations. Additionally, around 190 MW of projects across Miyazaki, Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima fall under the long-term offtake agreements. Tokyo Gas will secure usage rights for about 20 years, paying fees for access to the BESS assets.
In April 2026, Energy Vault Holdings acquired an 850 MW battery energy storage (BESS) development portfolio from a domestic developer in Japan. The portfolio includes 350 MW of advanced-stage projects expected to begin construction in the second half of 2027 and operations in the second half of 2028, along with 500 MW of early-stage projects.
