Ashok Leyland breaks ground for battery manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu

Ashok Leyland has broken ground for a greenfield battery pack manufacturing facility at Pillaipakkam near Chennai. The project is expected to incur an investment of around Rs 4 billion to Rs 5 billion. It is part of the Hinduja Group’s planned investments under an MoU inked in September 2025.

Furthermore, the new battery pack project aligns closely with Tamil Nadu’s Electric Vehicle Policy 2023, the National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage, and India’s vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The new facility is also expected to support the development of the EV ecosystem by enabling local production of battery packs. It is also expected to generate employment and skill development opportunities in Tamil Nadu.

Earlier in January 2026, Ashok Leyland inaugurated its integrated commercial vehicle plant focused on green mobility in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
