POWERGRID acquires BDPTL for evacuation of renewable energy in Karnataka

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has completed the acquisition of Bellary Davanagere Power Transmission Limited (BDPTL), the special purpose vehicle set up for the transmission project in Karnataka. The project aims to facilitate the evacuation of about 0.25 GW of renewable energy at Davanagere and 2.75 GW at Bellary. The acquisition was executed at an aggregate value of around Rs 132 million. The transaction includes 50,000 equity shares with a face value of Rs 10 each. It also consists of the company’s assets and liabilities as of the date of acquisition.

Furthermore, the acquisition comes after POWERGRID was selected as the successful bidder through the tariff-based competitive bidding process. The project was earlier managed by REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited, which also acted as the bid process coordinator. The project has been awarded on a build, own, operate, and transfer basis. According to the tender guidelines, the scope of work under the project includes the construction of a 400 kV double-circuit transmission line across Karnataka. It also involves the development of associated line bays and augmentation works at the Davanagere and Bellary pooling stations.

Earlier in January 2026, POWERGRID issued a tender to develop a 125 MW/500 MWh standalone battery energy storage system connected to the state transmission network.
