India installs over 2 million rooftop solar systems under PM Surya Ghar

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) was launched in February 2024 to promote rooftop solar adoption across India. Since its launch, 2,085,514 rooftop solar systems have been installed nationwide, benefiting 2,614,446 households. The scheme has seen a disbursement of Rs 147.71 billion as central financial assistance up to December 2025.

Under the scheme, it is estimated that installing rooftop solar systems in 10 million households could generate around 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity. This deployment is expected to lead to a reduction of approximately 720 million tonnes of carbon-equivalent emissions over the 25-year operational lifetime of the rooftop solar systems.

The top five states in terms of progress under the scheme, based on installations, households benefitted and CFA released as of December 2025, were Gujarat (515,052 installations; 741,819 households benefitted; Rs 38.45 billion CFA released), Maharashtra (391,887 installations; 634,782 household benefitted; Rs 27.87 billion CFA released), Uttar Pradesh (326,386 installations; 329,847 household benefitted; Rs 22.34 billion CFA released), Kerala (177,392 installations; 182,071 households benefitted; Rs 12.75 billion CFA released) and Rajasthan (119,006 installations; 122,027 households benefitted; Rs 8.23 billion CFA released).
