Korkia secures approval for solar projects in Canada

Korkia has obtained power plant approvals from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for two utility-scale solar projects in Alberta, Canada. The approvals cover the 268 MW AC UK Solar East project and the 162 MW AC UK Solar West project, both located in the County of Oyen. These approvals represent a critical regulatory step and advance the projects toward construction readiness and future commercial operation. Once commissioned, UK Solar East and UK Solar West projects are expected to generate around 850,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually.

The power plant approval is the primary authorisation required in Alberta to build and operate electricity generation facilities. Issued by the AUC, it confirms that the projects have been evaluated against technical standards, environmental considerations, land-use requirements, and public interest criteria. Furthermore, for renewable energy developments, receiving this approval reduces regulatory risk and allows progression toward final investment decisions, financing arrangements, and execution.

In January 2026, Biko Renewable Energy, a joint venture between Korkia and BIWO Rinnovabile, completed the sale of two fully permitted solar projects in Italy. The transaction covered the 4 MW Pradamano project and the 2.5 MW San Giovanni al Natisone project, both located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and ready for construction. Once operational, the projects are expected to generate around 9,500 MWh of renewable electricity annually.
