The year 2025 witnessed record capacity additions in India’s renewable energy sector, with the total installed capacity crossing 250 GW as of December 2025. Encouraging growth in the sector was seen not only in terms of capacity additions in GW terms, but also in the overall value chain and ecosystem development.

From an emphasis on transmission and distribution infrastructure to incentives enabling consumers to become prosumers through distributed solar; from demand creation and deployment of critical infrastructure such as energy storage system and green hydrogen facilities to investments in automation and AI-integrated tools for greater efficiency as well as development of local supply chains for solar, wind, green hydrogen and energy storage – the year 2025 saw collective action from all stakeholder groups towards the creation of a future-ready power infrastructure.

The year 2026 brings with it a lot of promise as well as uncertainty. Led by solar power and energy storage, the growth momentum in the entire renewables sector is expected to continue as the country surges ahead to meet its energy transition goals. However, there are clear signs of supply chain disruptions in the near-to-medium term owing to evolving geopolitics and trade relations; already prices have started rising for solar cells and lithium-ion batteries.

The race is on between major economies to secure essential resources for clean energy expansion, including critical minerals and raw materials for production of solar cells, batteries, wind turbines, electrolysers and other equipment. While large global suppliers are tightening exports to retain their dominance, nations such as India, the US and others are focusing on expansion of local capabilities and restricting imports through trade and non-trade barriers.

It would be interesting to see how the Indian renewable energy industry realigns its strategies to address these supply chain and pricing shocks in 2026. Meanwhile, we look forward to the expansion of R&D and testing facilities to develop indigenous technologies, upskilling of manpower to unlock technological innovation, and greater in- vestments and enabling policies for rapid scaling up of domestic manufacturing facilities, as we move towards our 2030 clean energy targets.
