The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has approved extensions of the scheduled commissioning date for renewable energy projects. These projects were delayed due to the Supreme Court mandate requiring the undergrounding of overhead transmission lines in Great Indian Bustard (GIB) habitats across Rajasthan and Gujarat. The delay has been classified as ‘Force Majeure.’
The extension comes after the Supreme Court’s verdict on the GIB case in December 2025. Furthermore, the MNRE clarified that the time extension will correspond to the duration starting from the date on which approval was sought under Section 68 of the Electricity Act, 2003, for overhead transmission lines, or March 21, 2024, whichever is later. This will extend up to December 19, 2025, when the Supreme Court delivered its judgment.
Additionally, developers who have received time extensions may extend the same benefit to other stakeholders across the value chain. This includes granting similar extensions to engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, material and equipment suppliers, and original equipment manufacturers.
