TURN2X and Axpo Iberia have entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the production of green e-methane in Spain. The agreement involves renewable electricity supplied by Axpo from projects developed by Aquila Clean Energy, which will be used in an electrolyser operated by TURN2X to produce renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO).
The electrolyser operated by TURN2X produces RFNBO methane gas by combining hydrogen generated through electrolysis with captured biogenic carbon. The process delivers renewable natural gas (RNG) that complies with European standards and can be transported through existing gas networks. The production aims to support hard-to-electrify and energy-intensive sectors, such as ceramics, steel, and shipping, as well as the maritime sector.
The cooperation was made possible through coordination between Axpo Iberia as the energy supplier, TURN2X as the technology operator, and Aquila Clean Energy as the renewable power producer. Their collaboration has enabled adaptation of the European RFNBO fuel certification framework to the Spanish market.
As per the Spanish government’s hydrogen roadmap, the country is aiming for at least 4 GW of electrolyser capacity by 2030 and annual consumption of up to 25,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen across industrial and transport sectors.
