The steel and heavy industries are among the most energy-intensive sectors, with continuous operations demanding vast amounts of electricity. This reliance not only drives up energy costs but also contributes significantly to the carbon footprint of industrial operations. Recognizing the strategic importance of clean energy for both cost efficiency and environmental stewardship, the Jindal Group, headquartered in Hisar, Haryana, has embraced solar energy as a key pillar of its long-term sustainability strategy.
In partnership with Orb Energy, a leading provider of made-in-India solar panels and turnkey installation services, Jindal Group has commissioned a total of 595 kWp rooftop solar capacity at its Hisar facilities.
The solar journey began in August 2016 with a 495 kWp installation, followed by an additional 100 kWp system in March 2017. Together, these systems now deliver a combined capacity of 595 kWp, generating an average output of 2,400 units of electricity per day, directly powering industrial processes and significantly reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.
Commenting on this strategic shift, a Jindal Group representative noted, “As one of India’s largest steel producers, energy efficiency is vital to our competitiveness. By adopting solar with Orb Energy, we are lowering operational costs and strengthening our commitment to sustainability. This project is a milestone in reducing our carbon footprint while ensuring reliable power for our operations.”
For Orb Energy, the partnership with Jindal Group highlights the expanding role of renewable energy solutions in energy-intensive industries. As Damian Miller, CEO and Co-founder of Orb Energy, explains, “The savings from solar can be reinvested into core operations, driving innovation, improving efficiency, and supporting long-term growth. It demonstrates how clean energy fuels industrial competitiveness.”
By integrating nearly 600 kWp of rooftop solar into its operations, Jindal Group has set a strong precedent for India’s steel and heavy industries. This initiative not only reinforces the economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy adoption but also exemplifies how industrial players can lead the way toward a sustainable future. The project stands as an inspiring example of how energy-intensive sectors can balance operational efficiency with environmental responsibility, encouraging others in the industry to follow suit and contribute meaningfully to a greener economy.
