Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has inked a battery energy storage purchase agreement (BESPA) with NHPC Limited. The project was secured under NHPC’s BESS Tranche-I tender through a competitive bidding route. Kerala State Electricity Board Limited is the end user of the battery energy storage system (BESS) asset.
The project involves setting up a 30 MW / 120 MWh BESS at the 220 kV substation in Areacode, Kerala. Furthermore, the project forms a part of NHPC’s broader initiative to develop 125 MW / 500 MWh of standalone battery storage capacity in Kerala under a tariff-based competitive bidding framework supported by viability gap funding.
Earlier in March 2025, TPREL inked a MoU with the government of Andhra Pradesh to develop up to 7,000 MW of renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and hybrid systems, with or without storage. The estimated investment for these projects is approximately Rs 490 billion.
