The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched the Innovative Projects Start-Up Challenge on Rooftop Solar and Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Technologies. The challenge is aimed at identifying and supporting breakthrough technologies in the rooftop solar and distributed energy sectors. It is being implemented under the guidance of MNRE with support from the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), in coordination with StartUp India and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
The challenge invites applications from Indian innovators and start-ups across four categories: affordability for low- and middle-income households through innovative financing, modular systems and circular economy strategies; enhancing climate resilience, grid stability and cybersecurity in solar infrastructure; inclusivity, by expanding access to underserved communities through community solar and virtual net metering models as well as financing; and environmental sustainability by promoting eco-friendly technologies like solar panel recycling, land-neutral deployment, and hybrid clean energy models. Eligible start-ups include those working in green technology, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, blockchain, construction, energy hardware, fintech, and waste management. The deadline for submission of applications is August 20, 2025.
Selected winners will receive incubation support, pilot implementation opportunities, and mentorship from industry experts facilitated by MNRE and NISE. A total prize pool of Rs 23 million will be awarded, including Rs 10 million for the first prize, Rs 5 million for the second prize, Rs 3 million for the third prize, and ten consolation prizes of Rs 500,000 each.
