Gouranga Sen: Group Head, Economic and Policy Analysis, Vedanta Limited

Gouranga Sen is group head of economic and policy analysis at Vedanta Limited. He has over 20 years of experience in research and analysis in the metal and mining industry, covering a diverse range of commodities, such as dry bulk minerals, base metals, oil & gas and critical minerals. Beyond his expertise in economic analysis and commodity research, his rich experience includes policy advocacy, trade remedies, market due diligence, mergers and acquisitions, and benchmarking.

He has worked with diverse business structures, including start-ups, conglomerates and consultancies, as well as in the mining and manufacturing industries. Before joining Vedanta, he worked with Reliance Industries Limited, Essar Steel (now ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India), Geovale Services, etc., in various analytical roles.

According to Sen, “India’s economic development will be mineral-intensive. The momentum behind the adoption of clean energy technology is driving a strong demand for critical minerals in India. Simultaneously, traditional sectors such as transport infrastructure, conventional energy generation, transmission, home appliances, and new-age manufacturing like electronics and defence manufacturing will continue to support mineral demand growth. As mineral supply must quickly catch up with this growing demand, the infrastructure sector in India has a crucial role to play in efficiently and economically delivering minerals and energy products to the industrial and household sectors. The adoption of electric vehicles in mineral transportation is reducing the carbon footprint, while the integration of artificial intelligence is enhancing logistics solutions.”

Sen has been instrumental in establishing research and analysis as a key pillar for functions such as corporate affairs, communication, investor relations, environment, social and governance (ESG), and legal cases. He actively participates in national and global policy dialogues on mining, manufacturing, sustainable development and trade-related matters. He is also an active member of various industry and trade associations in India. He believes, “The application of economic and market research is not limited to marketing strategy; rather, it can add immense value to many other functional areas across corporate set-ups.”

He believes that his success lies in the success of his team. His management style is defined by delegating authority, clear communication and a positive attitude. Sen holds an MBA in Finance from the Indian Institute of Finance, Greater Noida. In his free time, he enjoys playing table tennis and has a keen interest in Indian mythology.
