ENGIE and NHOA Energy to construct 400 MWh BESS in Belgium

NHOA Energy and ENGIE have commenced construction on a 400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Kallo, located in the municipality of Beveren. The project is being executed by NHOA Energy under a supply contract and long-term service agreement with ENGIE.

The project stems from ENGIE’s successful participation in the fourth Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auction conducted by Elia, Belgium’s transmission system operator. The CRM scheme was introduced by the Belgian government to ensure long-term grid reliability, especially in light of the planned partial phase-out of the country’s nuclear power fleet by 2025.

The project will significantly contribute to the region’s energy transition while repurposing the former Kallo power plant site, which previously ran on natural gas and fuel oil before shutting down in 2011.
