Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC Limited of India and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) of Sri Lanka, has announced the commencement of a 50 MW solar project. The solar project is located in the eastern province of Sri Lanka and marks a key development in bilateral energy cooperation between the two countries
The total planned capacity of 120 MW will be implemented in phases, starting with the initial 50 MW. The power purchase agreement between TPCL and CEB, along with the implementation agreement with the government of Sri Lanka for the 50 MW Phase I, has already been signed. The estimated investment for the overall project is around $100 million.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Sri Lanka’s clean energy infrastructure. Additionally, it is projected to help avoid emissions of approximately 200,000 tonnes of carbon annually.
