The joint venture (JV) between bp and Iberdrola España has commenced construction of a 25 MW green hydrogen plant in Spain. The initial phase for this plant consists of earthworks and the development of an approximately 20,000 meter square plot of land next to the bp refinery in Castellón. Civil work for the project will commence in the second quarter of 2025.
Furthermore, investments in the project exceed €70 million. The development of the project is being carried out through Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L. which is jointly owned by bp and Iberdrola España. The plant is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026. The electrolyser will be powered by renewable electricity through a power purchase agreement supplied by Iberdrola from photovoltaic and wind farms.
Iberdrola and bp approved construction of the 25 MW green hydrogen plant at bp’s Castellón refinery in September 2024. This is their first joint hydrogen project under Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L.
