Amazon has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Aer Soléir to develop three utility-scale wind farms: Vermio North, Vermio South, and the Mesokorfi and Koukouras projects in the Peloponnese region. The €496 million project, financed by the National Bank of Greece and the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, also aims to provide local economic benefits through job creation, community investments, and biodiversity programs. Aer Soléir has allocated €1.8 million for reforestation efforts and €1 million for community infrastructure improvements.
This initiative supports Amazon’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and aligns with Greece’s National Energy and Climate Plan to increase renewable electricity generation to over 80 per cent by 2030. The wind farms will contribute to Greece’s transition away from fossil fuels, which currently account for nearly half of the country’s electricity generation.
In January 2024, Amazon signed a corporate power purchase agreement with Engie for 473 MW of the 882 MW Moray West offshore wind farm in Scotland, expected to begin operations in 2024.
