NTPC Limited has announced that it is establishing a one tonne per day seawater to green hydrogen plant. This plant will be developed through NETRA, the Research and Development centre of NTPC. It will be set up at NTPC Simhadri near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The seawater will be processed through a low-carbon desalination plant that will use waste heat from the thermal power plant flue gas. This will result in hydrogen-grade water obtained from seawater conversion at a lower cost. According to NTPC’s press release, approximately 12-13 kg of purified water is required to produce 1 kg of hydrogen.
In November 2024, NTPC, through its research and development wing NETRA, announced that it will set up a green hydrogen production plant. The plant will utilise plasma oxy gasification of municipal solid waste (MSW) and agri-waste technology. In the same month, NTPC announced that it has been successful in the synthesis of carbon dioxide captured from flue gas with hydrogen produced from a PEM electrolyser and then converted into methanol at NTPC’s Vindhyachal plant.
