Hindustan Zinc has launched EcoZen, Asia’s first low carbon green zinc. It is manufactured using renewable energy and has a carbon footprint of less than one tonne of carbon equivalent per tonne of zinc produced. This is approximately 75 per cent lower than the global average.
Zinc is majorly used to galvanise steel and is prominently used in sectors such as infrastructure, automotives, renewable energy, energy storage etc. Using EcoZen will result in an estimated carbon emission abatement of 400 kg across Hindustan Zinc’s value chain.
Hindustan Zinc Limited is a part of the Vedanta group and the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer. They supply to more than 40 countries.
Recently in July 2024, Hindustan Zinc started procuring clean energy from Serentica’s 180 MW solar project in Bikaner, Rajasthan for its operations.
In September 2022, the company’s Patnagar metal plant became Vedanta’s first unit to run completely on green power. Furthermore, in the same month, Hindustan Zinc acquired a 26 per cent stake in Serentica Renewables India, a special purpose vehicle for Rs 3.5 billion.
