Karnataka: Growing prominence in the renewable energy sector

Karnataka was an early mover in the Indian renewable energy sector and has risen to prominence because of its effective policies, programmes and their implementation. The state has overachieved its past solar targets, with the impressive expansion of large-scale solar parks, and has set ambitious renewable capacity targets in the Karnataka Renewable Energy Policy 2022-27. It is now actively looking to promote pumped storage and green hydrogen projects as well. Despite these positives, the state needs to address issues related to the integration of large amounts of renewables into the grid and inefficiencies in the distribution segment, such as increasing aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses and decreasing collection efficiency.
