Amazon revealed that it has achieved its clean energy goal seven years ahead of schedule. The company has been the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy worldwide for four consecutive years since 2020, according to the Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Additionally, Amazon has invested billions of dollars in over 500 solar and wind projects internationally. In 2019, Amazon set a target to match all electricity consumption across its global operations spanning data centers, corporate offices, grocery stores, and fulfillment centers with 100 per cent clean energy by 2030.
Amazon has invested in 50 wind and solar projects to date in India. According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the company holds the position of the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in India. In 2022, Amazon initiated six utility-scale projects in the country, including three wind-solar hybrid projects in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, and three solar farms in Rajasthan, with a combined renewable energy capacity of 920 MW. Based on a new economic model developed by Amazon, from 2014 to 2022, their wind and solar farms have facilitated an estimated Rs 28.85 billion in investments in Indian communities. These projects have also contributed around Rs 7.19 billion to India’s GDP and supported over 20,600 local full-time equivalent jobs in 2022 alone.
