NTPC signs MoU with NALCO for power supply to NALCO’s new smelter facility

NTPC Limited and National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) have signed a MoU to investigate diverse alternatives such as coal-based thermal, solar photovoltaic, wind, other renewable energy sources, energy storage, or a combination thereof. The aim is to provide approximately 1,200 MW or above of round-the-clock and uninterrupted electricity, meeting the expansion needs of NALCO’s smelter plant in Angul, Odisha.

Recently, in February 2024, ONGC and NTPC Green Energy Limited entered into a joint venture agreement to develop renewable energy projects with a focus on offshore wind. In the same month, NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) issued a tender to select hybrid energy generators for the delivery of power from 1,000 MW inter-state transmission connected wind-solar hybrid projects, tranche-V, with or without energy storage system in India. Furthermore, NTPC REL issued a tender for the engineering, procurement, and construction of 500 MW (2X250 MW), of grid-connected solar projects in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

In January 2024, NTPC REL issued a tender to supply bifacial solar modules, of cumulative DC capacity of 1,515 MWp, (comprising four blocks, each with a capacity of 378.75 MWp) having wattage output of at least 540 Wp each, for 1,200 MW Khavda solar project, north block, in Gujarat.
