RWE selects Siemens Gamesa for its Thor offshore wind project in Denmark

Siemens Gamesa has been chosen by German energy giant RWE as the preferred wind turbine provider for its Thor offshore wind project in Denmark. For the 1 GW offshore project, Siemens Gamesa will deliver and maintain 72 of its SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines. A contract for the project was signed by representatives from Siemens Gamesa and RWE at the Danish National Test Centre for Large Wind Turbines in Østerild. All deliveries are subject to a final investment decision by RWE.

The Thor offshore project is set to be built in the Danish North Sea, roughly 22 km from Thorsminde on Jutland’s west coast. The installation of the turbines is anticipated to start in 2026, and it will be completed from the Danish port of Esbjerg. By the end of 2027, the project is expected to be operational and will be able to supply electricity to more than one million Danish homes. Once finished, it will boost Denmark’s ability to produce renewable energy and aid in lowering its carbon emissions.

In November 2022, Siemens Gamesa was contracted to provide OX2 with 11 of its SG 6.6-170 turbines for the Riberget wind project in Sweden. At the 70 MW wind project, which is situated in Sweden’s Ljusdal municipality, the onshore wind turbines would be installed. The SG 6.6-170 turbines would be installed at a hub height of 115 metres to harness the area’s best wind speeds.
